Raine followed the head librarian into the first room. It looked like any other area around the school if you ignored the complete lack of furniture. She wasn’t sure how people had missed the fact that they couldn’t access it. There were two sets of windows where the walls formed a corner. The floors were bare wood, and the walls were remarkably clean. Pale cream wallpaper shimmered with light golden patterns Raine couldn’t quite make out.

Small scuff marks on the floor suggested that furniture had been there once and moved around. Now, it stood entirely bare. Cameron looked around the room and sneezed as the thin layer of dust affected him. The windows looked out over the back of the grounds. He thought they were over the kitchens, but he couldn’t hear a single sound outside the room. Absolute silence reigned.

“Why would they soundproof this room?” Cameron looked at Librarian Decker. “I can’t hear anything outside of this room.”

The gnome looked around and pursed his lips. His mind flitted to dark theories full of blood and heartache.

“Perhaps there was an animal with a dangerous cry in here.” He gave a weak smile. “Something that would harm others should it have been heard.”

Cameron walked around the room with his ears pricked. He saw Raine inspect the wallpaper, but his instincts told him there was something in that room with them. The shifter couldn’t quite be sure what it was or where it was, but his hackles stood on end. Something skittered across the ceiling above his head and he bared his teeth reflexively, ready to attack.

Everyone paused and looked up.

Suddenly, a swarm of scorpions flooded the room from a pinpoint in the middle of the ceiling. They scurried across the white paint and dropped down around the students. Raine didn’t intend to waste time waiting to see what they would do. She pulled the fire spell into her mind and William stepped beside her. They set the scorpions alight as they tried to run across the floor toward the students.

Cameron stomped on those they hadn’t reached. Sara jumped back when one began to climb up her leg. She threw an air spell at it and launched it into the far wall. The students and gnomes scorched the entire room to leave blackened husks in their wake. Raine felt herself and her magic grow tired and the scorpions still spilled into the room.

She wouldn’t give in that easily and joined Cameron in his crusade against the scorpions, stamped on them with everything she had, and hoped her energy would return to her soon. The others grew equally as tired. Evie froze when a scorpion landed directly on her head. She looked at William with wide-eyed terror. He reacted without thought and directed a thin stream of Ifrit fire directly at it. The scorpion’s charred remains dropped off her head and he ran to hug her tightly.

The students had no choice but to stamp on the creatures as exhaustion overcame all of them. Fear began to rise within them.
